Frequently
Asked Questions:
What is Safari's purpose?
Safari's is a non-profit 501c3 wildlife refuge that has two missions;
rescue & education.
1) Safari's takes in, and gives permanent refuge to exotic wildlife of all kinds.
Currently housing around 200 animals.
2) Safari's also strives to educate our youth on the dangers of having exotics
as "pets".
Where do Safari's animals come from?
Most of our animals come from private individuals that can no longer keep them;
whether they had them illegally, or simply got in over their head. But many
just had lifestyle changes that could not accommodate having exotic animals.
Some animals come from other zoo's that over-breed. Some are retired show animals.
Some are just wild animals. And some zoo's simply shut down.
Why don't the regular largely funded zoo's
take in these animals?
AZA (American Zoological Association) only allows animals that have NOT
been altered in any way (most rescued animals have been declawed, spayed/neutered,
defanged…). AZA only allows animals with full histories back to the wild
(most rescued animals seldom even know where the animal came from).
Is
Safari's licensed and regulated?
Yes! Safari's is licensed by the USDA (United States Department
of Agriculture) as an exhibitor; which means we are under the same rules and
regulations as regular public zoo's. Also licensed thru the State Wildlife Department
of Okla.
How
is Safari's Staffed ?
Safari's is staffed solely by animal loving, big hearted volunteers. We all
have other jobs, but work overtime, weekends, and after work to care for all
our animals. No salaries are paid.
How is Safari's funded ?
Safari's is funded solely by gate admissions, tours, parties, donations,
and the founders outside income/donations. No federal funding has been offered.
No grants nor corporate sponsors yet.
